The National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced its pre-season NCAA Division II men's soccer rankings and the defending national champion Fort Lewis College Skyhawks soared to the top.

Already ranked preseason No. 1 in the nation by the College Soccer News, The University of Akron men's soccer program got another boost Tuesday by earning the top spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.

The NCAA D-I Men's Soccer Committee has selected the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area of Alabama to serve as the host for the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship.

As the 2010 FIFA World Cup enters its final weekend of competition, University of Hartford men's soccer coach Dan Gaspar will be watching the planet's premier international soccer tournament crown a champion on television from his home state of Connecticut like many other fans throughout the world.

The University of West Florida and Pensacola Sports Association will host the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Soccer Championships at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola in December 2011, it was announced by the NCAA this week. UWF has acted as host of the Division II national championships for men's and women's soccer two previous times, including the 2006 Division II Fall Festival in Pensacola and the 2007 championships held in Orange Beach, Ala.

Jamie Clark has stepped down as the Virginia B. and James O. Welch '52 Head Coach for Harvard Men's Soccer, to take the head coach position at Creighton.

Paul Ratcliffe of Stanford University and Matt Yelton of Lee University each were honored for the second consecutive year with the announcement of the 2009 NSCAA/Mondo National Coach of the Year awards.

Senior forward Kelley O'Hara from Stanford University and sophomore forward Teal Bunbury from the University of Akron are the winners of the 2009 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, presented to the top female and male players in NCAA Division I soccer. The winners were decided by a vote of NCAA Division I soccer coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro men's soccer coach Michael Parker, the winningest active coach in Division I men's soccer, announced his retirement Wednesday effective June 30 of this year.

Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass today named Todd Yeagley to be IU's third head men's soccer coach. Yeagley takes command of the illustrious program after an expansive national search in which several candidates were contacted and interviewed by Indiana University faculty members and athletics administrators. A four-time All-American and National Player of the Year at Indiana, Yeagley returns to Bloomington after serving as the head soccer coach at the University of Wisconsin.

As much as losing the championship game on penalty kicks hurt Akron, the Zips have good reason to think they'll make their second straight College Cup appearance in 2010, when the final four of men's soccer will be played at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Blair Gavin, the midfielder whose penalty kick had put Akron in the final, lay face-down on the penalty box line for minutes afterward, inconsolable and motionless. Gavin, Akron's final hope in Sunday's penalty-kick shootout, had done the unthinkable, sailing his shot over the crossbar and giving Virginia the Division I men's soccer national championship Sunday at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Almost a quarter of Wake Forest's 27-man roster is African-American. Of Virginia's 26 players, eight are African-American. They include Tony Tchani, who scored a goal in the Cavaliers' 2-1 semifinal victory Friday against Wake. In the Division I national championship game Sunday at 1 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park, Virginia (18-3-3) will face top-ranked Akron (23-0-1), led by star forward Teal Bunbury, who is black. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, he grew up in Prior Lake, Minn.

The men's College Cup features two of the three finalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's 2009 Hermann Trophy, the Heisman of collegiate soccer. Junior midfielder Corben Bone of Wake Forest and sophomore forward Teal Bunbury of Akron are joined by Andre Akpan, a senior forward for Harvard.

The University of Akron men's soccer team knocked off UNC 5-4 in penalty kicks Friday night to advance to the national championship. UA will face Virginia, Sunday, Dec. 13 at 1:00 p.m.

Brian Ownby's (Glen Allen, Va.) golden goal in the 93rd minute lifted the No. 2 Virginia men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over No. 3 Wake Forest in the first semifinal of the 2009 College Cup at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The victory sent the Cavaliers (18-3-3) into their first national championship final since 1997, as they look for their first national title since 1994.

The site of the men's College Cup, which also will host the women's Cup in 2010, has a loftier ambition -- to hold a joint championship the same weekend in 2011 or 2012 and eventually to become the Omaha of college soccer. Omaha, Neb., is the permanent home of the baseball College World Series.

It is the final weekend of matches before the first regular season NSCAA/adidas Poll comes out and with nine out of the top ten schools in action, including two Top 5 matchups. Andrew Simon previews all the action this weekend.

The University of Akron men's coach is carving a niche in "Rubber City," the birthplace of Goodrich, Goodyear and Firestone, and he intends to fill that niche with national championships. In three seasons at Akron, he has used his ability to attract talent and an attractive, attacking style of play to turn a traditionally strong program into an elite one.

After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer with top-seeded and undefeated Akron, Virginia won, 3-2, in PK's to earn the program's sixth-ever title and first since 1994.
