August is here, meaning it's time for our annual pilgrimage to Monterey for the smorgasbord of classic and collectible cars that awaits. Events there include Gordon McCall's Motorworks Revival, The Pebble Beach Tour, Concorso Italiano, The Quail, the auctions, The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Concours d'LeMons and the granddaddy of them all - The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. We'll be on hand to cover it all for you, just in case you can't make the trip yourself.
For those of you more inclined toward American iron, Hot August Nights is going on and there's the annual Woodward Dream Cruise happening in Detroit as well. Those are in addition to many other end-of-summer-type events happening around the rest of the country, like New York Autofest, Legends of Motorsport: Corvette Grand Sport, BMW West Coast Summer Concours, The 53rd Annual New Hope Automobile Show, Columbia River Concours d'Elegance, The Milwaukee Masterpiece, The Morgan Adams Concours d'Elegance, BlackTop Nationals, 4th Annual Garage Cruise, 15th CARS Inc. The IndyCar Series stops at Mid-Ohio, Infineon and Chicagoland, while ALMS heads to Mid-Ohio, Road America and Mosport. WRC will be in action in Germany, while Rally America fans can catch the gang at the X-Games 16 and then at New Jersey Motorsports Park at the end of the month. LeMons brings its budget racing action to the LeMons Arse-Sweat-Apalooza and LeMons Mutually Assured Destruction of Omaha.

A Techie Show-N-Tell
For the seventh year, Detroit PR firm AutoCom Associates has rounded up its most interesting auto-industry clients for a techie show-n-tell. The sexiest tech among the various clients is Gibbs Technologies' highly anticipated line of high-speed amphibious vehicles. We got a test-ride in the Gibbs Aquada -- on land and in the water -- two years ago , and reported that production of Gibbs first high-speed amphibian would likely commence within 18 months, but that it would not necessarily be the Aquada. That last bit was right. Gibbs Chairman Neil Jenkins confirmed that production of the Quadski would begin within a year. This smaller vehicle runs like a QuadRunner on land and a Jet Ski in the water, reaching 45 mph in either environment. The company has also announced that Concorde Marine has been contracted to supply composite hulls and other carbon fiber components for all its vehicles in a facility to be opened in Auburn Hills, MI. It was also broadly hinted that the next product down the chute is likely to be the Hummer-like amphibious first-responders vehicle previously referred to as Humdinga. The US regulatory community is stymied by the Aquada, which is equally at home in the water and on land. This puts certain safety mandates at odds with the vehicle's mission. Drive into the water hard enough and you could set off an airbag. Seatbelts are mandatory and a 100-percent good idea on land, but they're dangerous in the water if the vehicle capsizes. Design issues remain to be resolved as well (like providing some sort of top and weather protection that still permits entry over the high gunwales, providing climate control; etc.) but those issues will probably be resolved long before the regulatory knots are untangled.

July means Independence Day to most Americans, but it also means racing, concours, auctions, shows, meets, rallies, and tons of other summer car fun. As July 9 has officially been dubbed Collector Car Appreciation Day, it's only fitting that we start off with a couple of vintage car events. The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place the first weekend in July this year, with three days of vintage and exotic car action from West Sussex, England. The Meadow Brook Concours will once again bring some of the finest classic cars in the world together on the lawns of Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester, Michigan.
There are also hundreds of other shows planned, like the Jellybean Show in Surrey, B.C., Michigan Camaro Superfest, Hot San Jose Nights, Dana Point Porsche 356 Concours, Bixby Knolls Drag Fest, Keeneland Concours, San Diego Jaguar Concours, SEMA Show and Shine in Pasadena, Lexani Lifestyle event in Anaheim, and several events at the Petersen and Simeone Museums.
Racing fans will also have a busy schedule, especially if they plan on following multiple series. Formula 1 fans can take in the Grands Prix from Britain and Germany, while NASCAR visits Daytona, Chicago and Indianapolis for the Brickyard 400. The IndyCar Series makes an Independence Day stop at Watkins Glen before the transporters load up and head north of the border for races in Toronto and Edmonton. The ALMS guys and gals are back from their European vacation, and heading to Miller Motorsports Park and Lime Rock Park in July. The rally aces of the WRC will be in action in Bulgaria and Finland, while Rally America fans can catch the gang at the New England Forest Rally. Grand-Am cars will be visiting Daytona and New Jersey while the NHRA circus will be hitting stops in Seattle, Sonoma and Denver this month.

If you've got your ear to the ground, you've probably heard a thing or two about the Targa Trophy. Think of it as a more responsible, but no less entertaining version of the Gumball. Instead of encouraging drivers to be the first across the line, the Targa trophy works just like any other TSD (time, speed, distance) road rally: teams are given the location of a checkpoint and are expected to navigate there within a predetermined amount of time. Those closest to the time without being over (or under) are awarded the most points.
This year's running of the SoCal event has wrapped up with 73 drivers tackling a varied course that wound through the Californian countryside. Radoslav Kalla and his Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder took the overall win with 1,048 points. His closest competitor, Thomas Dillman, piloted an Audi S4 to finish with 966 points.
The Targa Trophy will now head to San Francisco. The green flag drops on August 27, and the checkers will fall the following day in Silicon Valley. For now though, you can enjoy a few shots of the participating metal on hand for the SoCal Targa Trophy, or reminisce about last year's event by reading our own Jonny Lieberman's account of his drive in a Hyundai Genesis in the 2009 event.

As if classic car fans in California weren't spoiled enough with the annual festivities in Monterey, world-class concours in Palm Springs, La Jolla, Dana Point, Palos Verdes, and Pasadena, and first-rate museums like The Petersen and Nethercutt Collection, another incredible collection is being opened to the public this spring. Set to open April 15 in Oxnard, California, the Mullin Automotive Museum is the anchored by the vehicles of Pebble Beach-winner and Monterey Historics racer Peter Mullin, and promises to be another m Gran Torino" />

Barrett-Jackson rallies support for first Orange County auction originally appeared on Autoblog on Sun, 20 Jun 2010 19:02:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

The folks behind the Barrett-Jackson auctions have been called many things, but "stupid" isn't one of them. They know that trying to start up a new auction in a new locale requires a lot more than propping up a tent and putting out the "For Sale" sign. You need to get the community behind you if you plan on staying.
Hoping to become a permanent fixture in the Southern California car scene, the crew descended upon Orange County a week ahead of their scheduled auction in Costa Mesa and tried to show that they're in it for the long haul. In addition to winning over some local legislators and law enforcement, they also recruited car clubs from all over the Southland for a road rally from the iconic South Coast Plaza "please-don't-call-it-a-mall" shopping destination over to the site of the auction, the Orange County Fairgrounds.
There were 100 cars in the parade, including Mustangs old and new, Porsches of every era, vintage and late-model musclecars, a ton of British roadsters and a small squadron of Hollywood hero cars. A police escort led the cars on their three-mile route. At the Fairgrounds, the cars were then put on display and the drivers were given goodie bags that included tickets to next weekend's auction.
We tagged along and took some pics, which you can see in the gallery below. Click through and you'll find some of our favorites - one of the original Batmobiles, a 'Starsky and Hutch' Gran Torino, an Adam-12 Plymouth, K.I.T.T., a sick custom T-Bird (check out the grille), a Panther Pink Challenger T/A and an LS2-powered Studebaker Golden Hawk. We'll be back next week to share some auction highlights as well. If you're going to be in the area, check out the Barrett-Jackson website to see if there's anything you might want to bid on. We have our eye on a certain Fiat Multipla already.

The ESPN X Games are coming to the LA Coliseum July 29 to August 1, and for the first time, SuperRally will be coming with them. Americans might know SuperRally as the Harley Davidson events, but it's actually a renaming of the European sport of RallyCross, which looks for all the world like motocross but with cars.
The field begins with 12 drivers who will do time trial runs to decide the grids for three elimination races. According to ESPN, "The winner of the Elimination heats and the highest seeded driver who has not yet advanced will compete in a four-lap last chance qualifier (LCQ). The winner of the LCQ will join the winners of the Elimination heat races in the five-lap final race."
We're not quite sure how that's going to work, but we're sure there'll be a lot of wheelspin, jumps and flying dirt, which is really what this is all about anyway. Tickets for the X Games go on sale June 24. Thanks for the tip, Joe!

Colorado Boulevard is one of those streets that is known to millions of people around the world, many of whom have never set foot in California. In this case, it's because Colorado serves as the thoroughfare that hosts the annual Rose Parade, the float-tastic flower-power procession that precedes the Rose Bowl college football game in Pasadena, California. During the rest of the year, it's known as a great spot for shopping, dining and people watching for locals and tourists alike. But on a certain Sunday in May, it is also known as a place to see Prancing Horses. You see, Colorado Blvd. in Old Town Pasadena is the site of the Concorso Ferrari event. One of the largest annual gatherings of Maranello's finest, Concorso Ferrari 2010 is expected to draw more than 100 classic and late-model GTs, sportscars and supercars for a free-to-the-public event like no other. The combined value of the vehicles is expected to top $100 million, with nearly one-fifth of that amount accounted for by one particular model - a Pebble Beach-winning 250 Series I Cab. Other highlights on the entry list include a Cavallino Best of Show 250 GT SWB, the Agnelli 400SA (fresh from the Ferrari Museum in Maranello), a Concorso Italiano Platinum winning 400SA, and one of six Vignale 225S racers produced.
Organized by the Ferrari Club of America, Southwest Region, the Concorso will stretch across several blocks of Colorado, from Pasadena Ave. to Raymond, and will run from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday, May 16. The event will be a judged concours for pre-'99 cavallini, with unjudged displays of newer cars including not just those from Ferrari, but Maserati, Aston Martin, Lotus, Spyker, and Mercedes-Benz models as well.
The full press release and contact info is pasted in after the jump.

If it's good enough for Pebble Beach... For the first time in its history, the 28th Annual Dana Point (née Newport Beach) Concours d'Elegance will host an exhibit of antique and vintage motorcycles alongside the usual assortment of incredible automobiles from every era. The event has been moved up to the summer this year, but will once again be held at the St. Regis Resort in Dana Point, California.
Those who show up on that Sunday (June 27, 2010) will find that Alfa Romeo is the featured marque, celebrating 100 years of great racing and road cars in 2010. The 80-year-old Pininfarina design house will also be feted, but the big news for bike lovers will be the exhibition-only classes featuring 65 significant motorcycles from throughout history. The preliminary groupings divide European, American and Japanese motorcycles, as well as production and competition models.
Entry forms and additional information can be found online at: www.DanaPointConcours.org.

There's no shortage of ways for an automaker to celebrate a big anniversary. Debuting a pivotal new product - like the new Giulietta - is one of 'em. Commissioning a series of concept cars - like the Pininfarina 2uettottanta, Bertone Pandion and Zagato TZ3 Corsa - is another. And so is hosting a huge rally for owners of its vehicles from around the world. Alfa Romeo, which this year celebrates its landmark centenary, is doing all of this and more.
Come June 26, an unprecedented gathering of Alfa Romeo owners and their vehicles will take place in the marque's home town of Milan, Italy. Some 3,000 participants are expected to join the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo for the event, which will include a helicopter-filmed rally through downtown Milan, live concerts and the presentation of a sculpture designed by the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo. Details in the press release after the jump.

This show's size and duration may have shrunk for 2010, but the quality and content of the show-floor displays, seminars and speeches were up. And the gems of future-tech are easier to ferret out without all the gasket, washer, and spring-clip vendors in the way. As always, we've got highlights.

Not so fast, Captain Planet. Hummer may be on its last leg at the moment, but fans of the brand aren't going to let their favorite earth-roaming SUVs go down without a fight. Capital & Labor International Coalition, a newly-minted organization, thinks it has all the answers to the brand's woes, and has scheduled a summit to help save Hummer here in the states on April 11.
This assemblage could be more than just a few fans with posters. CLIC has invited everyone from shareholders to Hummer's CEO and United Auto Workers leaders. Thane Ritchie, chairman of the organization, said CLIC has taken a good hard look at the General Motors/Hummer issue and there may be another option out there other than just turning off the lights for good.
Members of the group have even invited Senator Rolland Burris (D-Illinois) to help out as well. Burris will be acting as a liaison between the coalition and the federal government, especially when it comes to getting any aid for the brand. In the meantime, the Save Hummer in America rally will be held next week in Chicago. Hey, it worked for Saab, right?

Actor Patrick Dempsey is no stranger to racetracks, nor to the pages of Autoblog. We've run into the Gray's Anatomy star at various races and automotive events over the past few years, most recently piloting a '90s Mazda RX-792 LeMans racer in the Historics at Laguna Seca. We've even seen him run at Long Beach, although that was in their annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity race that usually features as many crashes and spins as a roller-derby match. This year, Dempsey is set to return to the streets of Long Beach, but not in a Scion tC, nor even his usual ride, the Mazda RX-8 he runs in the Rolex Grand-Am GT series. No, Patrick will instead be driving the wheels off a 2010 Mazda3 prepared by Tri-Point Motorsports for the World Challenge race during the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach weekend. So what was it like going from a push-me to a pull-me? Dempsey says he was impressed with the Mazda3, the first front-driver he's ever raced, though not surprised, as his daily driver is a Mazdaspeed3.
We'll be sure to keep an eye out for him when we head to Long Beach in a couple of weeks to cover the racing activities, which will include IndyCar, World Challenge and ALMS action. There's a longer press release from Mazda after the jump, with more details about the weekend of racing from Long Beach.

Another Low-Volume Premium Wagon?
Let's say Acura does as well as the premium wagon market leader, and 10 percent of its 2011 TSX sales are of its new 2011 Acura TSX Sport Wagon, which is making its debut at the 2010 New York auto show. That's little more than 3,000 units per year in the U.S., figuring that TSX sales next year will be closer to 2008's 32,000 than '09's 28,650. In many cities, chances are you'll go months after launch without seeing one.

A New Face and 400-hp, Twin-Turbo Motivation
While BMW spent last year adding upgraded engines to its lineup, the X5 sat untouched, forced to enjoy only the 3.0-liter diesel found in the xDrive35d. A potent mill, yes, but the other Bimmers received a more efficient, single turbo inline-six; if they didn't, more power came to their twin-turbo setup. A 400-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 headlined the X6, while the M versions of the X6 and the X5 boasted a silly 555-horsepower. Now, the standard X5 gets its turn. Along with an exterior refresh, the 2011 BMW X5 receives two new powertrains.

With BMW's intelligent all-wheel-drive system, the latest Alpina sticks to the street, even if that street is wet or snowy.
In February, at the Chicago Auto Show, we saw the latest from Alpina -- the new B7 sedan -- to be offered in both short- and long-wheelbase versions. With significant revisions to BMW's standard 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 that include new pistons, larger intercoolers, and increased boost pressure, the B7 was said to be good for a well-rounded 500 horsepower and a full 516 pound-feet of torque. Hook that type of power up to the B7's rear wheels and the improvements were good for 4.5-second 0 to 60 mph launches when the sun is shining and roads are dry. So what about when conditions aren't quite so good?

Hyundai's New Luxury Flagship Checks All the Right Boxes, But Is It Enough?
One year ago, Hyundai placed its Korean-market Equus flagship luxury sedan on its show stand at New York "to test reaction," though validating the decision to bring it here was more the case. Now, with the 2011 Hyundai Equus bound for the U.S. on display at this year's New York show, Hyundai appears to be setting out to accomplish what Lexus did 20 years ago, only this time around, Lexus finds itself a target.

CTRL-C + CTRL-V = CTS-V
If you followed our coverage of the 2010 Detroit Auto Show a few months back, you know Cadillac has a working knowledge of the copy/paste function, as demonstrated by the CTS-V Coupe -- essentially a CTS-V Sedan with Coupe bodywork. Not surprisingly, the formula is much the same for the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon debuting in New York.

Hyundai's Eco-Friendly Sonata Variant Plays the Numbers Game
There is no doubt that the all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata is a hugely important vehicle to the Korean automaker. Combining a swoopy new exterior with performance that rivals the best the midsize sedan segment has to offer, the all-new Sonata is out to increase market share in one of the hottest-contested classes in the U.S. Now, at the 2010 New York Auto Show, Hyundai has unveiled the requisite eco-friendly Sonata variant -- the Sonata Hybrid.

Mitsu's Compact, Compact Crossover
With the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport making its U.S. debut at New York, Mitsubishi has a crossover it can offer starting at less than $20,000. At a length of 169.1 inches, the Outlander Sport is more of a Lancer-alternative than a true compact crossover along the lines of class leaders like the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape.

Lincoln Enters Hybrid Fray with Familiar Powertrain
We like the Ford Fusion Hybrid -- a lot. So much so that it and the rest of the Fusion stable were dubbed MT's 2010 Car of the Year. It didn't take a Ford engineer to figure out that it wouldn't be long before Lincoln would come looking for a version of its own for its showrooms. Enter stage left, the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, which is making its big debut in the Big Apple.

Benz Gives its Crossover a Nosejob
Ever since its debut as a 2005 model year vehicle, the Mercedes R-Class has been one of Stuttgart's most controversial -- and questionably styled -- vehicles. Now with the 2011 R-Class, Mercedes is looking to change perceptions and jumpstart sales of the updated crossover, which is bowing at the 2010 New York show.

Who Needs a V-6 When You have a 274-hp Four?
The 2011 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T is something of a pioneer in the midsize sedan segment, and you can bet other automakers will be closely watching its market performance. On paper, the Sonata turbo has the best fuel economy, more horsepower, and more torque when compared to the V-6-powered offerings of its formidable competition. Whether Hyundai has delivered this powertrain in a package that people will pick over a traditional powerplant like a V-6 is another question.
